Job Description / Duties
The Program in Movement Sciences and Education at Teachers College, Columbia University invites applicants with expertise in applied exercise physiology to apply for a full-time tenure-track faculty position to teach graduate courses, supervise graduate student research, and conduct a focused program of research. Located in the Morningside Heights neighborhood of New York City, Teachers College takes a multidisciplinary approach to its graduate studies of Education, Health, and Psychology. The Department of Biobehavioral Sciences encompasses programs in Movement Sciences and Kinesiology, Communication Sciences and Disorders, and Neuroscience
and Education.
RANK:
Associate or Full professor. The position is tenure track, with the possibility for tenure for outstanding candidates.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The faculty member will provide an expanded depth of expertise to better meet broad range professional training requirements in the field, provide graduate student mentorship of a diverse student body, and enhance student and faculty research capabilities across the Movement Sciences/Kinesiology, the Department of Biobehavioral Sciences, and Teachers College. The faculty member will actively contribute to the masters and doctoral programs in applied physiology and the Joint Degree Program in Nutrition and Exercise Physiology. Conducting an active program of funded research is an expectation of this position.
Other responsibilities include teaching
graduate movement science courses in the applied physiology curriculum, mentoring of research and practical experiences for students, and providing academic advisement to students.
ABOUT THE PROGRAM IN APPLIED PHYSIOLOGY
The Applied (Exercise) Physiology program is part of the Movement Sciences and Education and Kinesiology Programs and offers Masters of Arts, Masters of Education, Doctor of Education and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. The Applied Physiology concentration involves the study of the integrative physiology of exercise, focusing on the acute and chronic adaptations to exercise across the lifespan. The effects of exercise training on sports performance and physical and mental health are emphasized. The program emphasizes the application of scientific evidence to the practice of exercise physiology. Students in the Applied Physiology Program study physical activity behavior, the physiological and psychological effects of acute and chronic exercise, how exercise influences physical and mental health, sports performance, and the promotion of physical activity in community, clinical, and public health settings.
ABOUT THE JOINT DEGREE PROGRAM IN NUTRITION AND EXERCISE PHYSIOLOGY
With the increased interest in exercise, sports, and wellness nutrition, the Nutrition and Exercise Physiology Program trains graduate professionals who are nationally certified as a Registered Dietitian-Nutritionist (RDN), and who have expertise in dietary factors related to exercise for health and sports performance, a thorough grounding in exercise physiology, and skills in nutrition counseling and education that, collectively, provides the foundation for working with children, youth and athletes, in corporate wellness programs and health clubs, private practice, and with out-patient and community-based programs.

Qualifications / Required Skills
Candidates should have an earned doctorate in exercise physiology, applied integrative human physiology, kinesiology, or a closely related field. Candidates should also present evidence of successful teaching, record of external funding and productive scholarship consistent with a rank of associate or full professor. Preference will be given to candidates whose research is in applied, translational, or implementation science that extends the current areas of applied exercise physiology scholarship and the social justice mission of Teachers College.
Preferred Qualifications:
Priority for applied exercise physiology research areas include, but are not limited to, 1) Physical activity and health equity for historically underserved communities.; 2) Technology-delivered interventions; 3) Physical activity and the environment; 4) Physical activity and physical and mental health; 5) Exercise training and conditioning. Certification or eligibility for certification as an ACSM Exercise. Physiologist, ACSM Clinical Exercise Physiologist, or NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist is required.
