Job Description / Duties

This is a full-time, twelve-month, faculty position responsible for serving as the chief administrator of the academic department while exemplifying those faculty qualities most valued by the academic community: teaching excellence, scholarly and creative activities, and a commitment to university, community, and professional service. Responsible for the development and implementation of department, college, and university policy; setting the tone of the academic department through daily interaction with colleagues and departmental staff; and serving as an advocate for the department’s needs to the administration and an interpreter of administrative policy to faculty and students. The chair works under minimal supervision, with extensive latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment, yet is communicative, collaborative, and transparent in decision-making—reports to the dean.

Qualifications / Required Skills

The successful candidate will have a terminal degree in one of the disciplines or a related field within the department.

The candidate will demonstrate a distinguished record of teaching, scholarship, and service, including active engagement with national professional education associations. The candidate’s record of teaching, scholarship, and service in a university setting should qualify her/him for tenure at the associate professor or professor rank within the department. Competence with technology related to high-quality instruction/course delivery and leadership/office management is critical. Experience with teaching innovations, field experiences, internships, service-based learning, and/or experiential learning activities is preferred.

e. Provide examples of how you have advocated for individual programs, students, staff, and/or faculty.

The Department of Kinesiology and Health Science is located within the Perkins College of Education. The primary purpose of the department is to prepare undergraduate students in health and kinesiology and to prepare graduate students in kinesiology and athletic training by way of state-of-the-art facilities, innovative teaching, research, and programming.
